ADMIRE at the University of Minnesota

research

The ADMIRE research activities are committed to research excellence. Innovative, relevant, high-visibility research projects will be co-authored by both PI faculty and CEMS faculty and submitted to refereed journals. Research presentations and seminars are to be given at international venues by all involved parties. Personnel exchange programs are being promoted so that both the PI and the CEMS Department may benefit from in-residence visits of graduate students, post-docs and faculty.

Research activities are organized into several inter-institutional research groups that interface synergistic faculty interests between the PI and UMN. IRGs are described below and in more detail. Each IRG is structured to achieve positive short-term outcomes and to build enduring research relationships.

IRG 1. Hydrocarbon Processing

Toward the immediate goal of improving the processing of oil and gas, we have established IRG1 which is dedicated to fundamental research related to the processing of hydrocarbons. In Phase I this IRG1 is broken into three projects all relating to hydrocarbon processing:

IRG 1.1 Catalytic Removal of Sulfur from Process Gas Streams without Addition of hydrogen: Effect of Zeolite Topology, Composition and Mesoporosity
IRG 1.2 Catalytic Alkane Metathesis
IRG 1.3 Coatings for Catalytic and Photocatalytic Processes
UMN faculty Aditya Bhan, Matteo Cococcioni, Lorraine F. Francis, Michael Tsapatsis
PI Faculty Saleh Al Hashimi, Radu Vladea

IRG 2. Simulation and optimization

Rigorous research in the areas of simulation and optimization will promote the development of mathematics, numerical methods, simulation, optimization, and control in areas of relevance to petroleum processing. Phase I projects and participants are summarized below:

IRG 2.1 Simulation, Optimization and Control of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell System
UMN faculty Prodromos Daoutidis, Jeff Derby
PI Faculty Ali Almansoori, Krishnaswamy Nandakumar

IRG 3. Polymer Processing

The production of polymers, which is one of the most promising downstream processes involving petroleum-derived feed stocks, is address by the projects of IRG3. Phase I projects and participants are listed below.

IRG 3.1 Polymeric Membranes for Advanced Process Engineering
IRG 3.2 Graphene/Polymer Composites
IRG 3.3 Synthesis and Processing of Functionalized Polyolefins
UMN faculty Frank Bates, Edward Cussler, Mark Hillmyer, Timothy P. Lodge, Christopher W. Macosko
PI Faculty Ahmed A. Abdala, Sulafudin Vukušić

IRG 4. Materials Science and Engineering (SEED)

Projects in IRG4 are addressing materials science and engineering issues that are fundamental and relevant to advancing the petroleum and energy industries. Unlike the other IRGs, which promote collaboration with the existing PI faculty, IRG4 is meant to seed new activity and spur the rapid development of the field of materials science and engineering at the PI. The Phase I SEED project and participants are listed below.
